Slap after slap after slap. Good lord. Brilliant brilliant articles. I've recently begun arguing. While consuming anything off the internet, I try to find loopholes and to form an out of the world opinion about the topic. For me, forming an authentic opinion was equals to going against whatever people try to feed me and coming up with a new notion which reflects the glories of my still-learning brain. In my defense, it makes sense. Atleast to me. Taking this article for example. Following this brilliant advice would be conforming to the writer's views again, no? No. And thank God, I learnt it. That arguing w an opinion and losing against it to accept it is forming an original opinion too. Taking inspiration from others opinions and meditating about it long enough to know whether you have ACTUALLY taken a deep-dive into the topic, WHY you agree to it and HOW you will defend it, is fine and something you should be proud of in this generation.

I felt so called out by the slight nausea of delivering someone else’s argument mid-conversation! It’s exactly that sense of homogeneity that drove me to write my recent piece. I was fed up with the realisation that even my original desires for things were just curated algorithm fodder. Your point about finding friction is the perfect antidote to the smooth scrolling culture I’m currently disillusioned with.

The other article was my first encounter with your work, and I went about thinking on how to be an original thinker, this was a great follow up Feifei. Love it!

Commenting so that I can start working on the advice of writing given here. My thought process and understanding have always been different from others that made me feel left out, so here I'm after trying to fit in so bad that I lost my thoughts. When I read the last article I felt like nope I do have my own thoughts and this isn't me. But then I noticed how the voices in my head don't belong to me most of the time. I just wish to free myself from others thoughts and opinions.

Also you write so beautifully. Your way of explaining the concept and the analogies you make are so striking and perfect.

And yes I'm going to stop reading the comments on every reel!

This hit so close to home and I'm very glad this brought some type of self awareness to me (I had to use one hand to cover the comments before I could type mine)

My friend suggested something that might be also helpful in getting you to think. If you having a conversation, you can try challenge the other person stand on whatever topic you are on to getting to the bottom of it. (Challenging the why)This could be vice versa. This can help build articulation of your thoughts and seeing things beyond surface level.

I loved this article. While reading, I couldn’t help but think “well this is how people get canceled.” When reflecting on that thought, it made me realize this is why I hold back my own thoughts and opinions. I am so terrified of cancel culture I refuse to not move with the crowd. People lose their jobs over going against the grain. It feels impossible to have your own opinion without someone wanting to use it against you later and ruin your life over it… I really hope as a society we can let people grow without trying to “teach them a lesson” in the process. Let natural the consequences of their misjudgment handle them

"When you finish a book, before you go to Goodreads, before you look at reviews, write a paragraph"

This is the key right here. I've been so reliant on letterboxd reviews to form my movie opinions lately, I fear I'm almost losing my taste.

I'm still curious to see what other people think, I like to know the publics opinion, and I do like letterboxd in general, but writing my own paragraph first is really necessary, otherwise, using the app stops me from having my thoughts.

honestly this really spoke to me! as someone who is easily influenced by the acceptable or popular opinion about a topic, i genuinely forgot the last time i actually had my OWN perspective on certain things. i know it’s gonna be hard after years of forming opinions out of absorbed safe thoughts to actually think but i will try to not let that part of me go that easily!! thank youu

Very well written. Forming an original thought is a skill that will rise to be in constant demand for the foreseeable future.

i swear i’ve been thinking about that article since i read it. It stuck with me in a way no other article has. I kept myself thinking about it or remembering something in there that would slap me in the face each time i outsourced my opinions, thoughts or how i expressed myself. The article did wonders to my personal life and career especially. So thank you for that and this follow up post ❤️
