Here's How I Would Build My substack From Scratch With Zero Audience.
Call me Sensei.
To the new readers who would come across this article, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Feifei(well, obviously).
I'm a multifaceted writer—an email Copywriter, a ghostwriter, a YouTube scriptwriter, a content writer and the writer's writer(I just came up with the last one. It has a nice ring to it, right?)
These are my credentials: I have a bachelor's degree in Communications and Media Studies—where I served as the Editor-in-chief for a literary organization in University and Arts Editor for my faculty's annual newspaper.
I've been published six times. Twice locally. Four times internationally. I've worked with multiple brands and companies in the writing space to bring their vision to life and I built my Substack from scratch—all the way from zero to over 36k subscribers in a year.
Most of you are here from that Viral video talking about one of my articles on Instagram. Some of you discovered me on Substack or those substack recommendations videos on TikTok and Instagram (Some mention Twitter, but I don't use that app). Few of you have been slumming it with me from way back. Yes, I also went through that phase where I felt like I was talking to a brickwall.
My words were going nowhere. Most of my subscribers were my friends who I threatened. Love you guys(: And contrary to popular consensus, I don't have a huge social media following. I mean, my Ig is linked to my Substack for god's sake. One click is all you need(all that growth happened because of that Viral article. I was literally at below 500 followers)
Now, how did that change in a span of one year? Well, settle down and read.
First of all and I say it with the best intentions and a lot of love—Your readers don't care about you. Now, hold on, let me explain. The readers on Substack want to feel seen and they don't really care about your unique experiences unless they can relate to that or feel seen in a way. It sounds selfish, but the game is the game. Your articles/essays being relatable UNIVERSALLY is the major key to growing on Substack. What do I mean by UNIVERSALLY?
It's quite simple and it breaks my heart when people don't maximize this to its full potential.
I'm going to stop right here because it wouldn't be fair to those who pay for a Substack consultation with me. So, reach out: idowuf42@gmail.com to book a paid Substack consultation with me where I audit your Substack and tell you what you need to do to grow and obviously get paid from substack (Paid subscriptions aren't the only way to get paid from Substack. It's the last on the food chain actually). Or you could hire me as a Substack ghostwriter—one of clients recently hit 1k subscribers. Reach out🤍
PS—I will be giving out all these tips for free at a workshop coming up by the end of the month. Register here
